Founding

1925

Piedmont "Plush" Mills, named after its innovatively soft and luxurious fabrics, was established in 1925 by Fred W. Symmes and Clifton Corley, with architectural design provided by the renowned J.E. Sirrine.

Thriving

1939

By 1939, Plush Mill housed 28 looms, producing a variety of fabrics including plush, mohair, and velour, as well as auto upholstery. Beyond its manufacturing role, the mill fostered a strong sense of community, offering above-average wages and attracting generations of families as employees. Its reputation for quality and desirable working conditions resulted in a consistent waitlist for employment opportunities

Closure

1983

The textile industry in South Carolina reached its zenith in the mid-1970s, with 437 mills in operation, employing approximately 143,000 workers. However, this peak was followed by a period of decline, ultimately leading to the closure of many mills, including Plush Mill. This decline was primarily attributed to the rise of foreign competition, which gradually eroded the Southeast's dominance in the textile market.

Rediscovery

2016

Mark Peters of Fountain Inn acquired the dilapidated site in October 2016. “I’m interested in this site for its significance to the community and as a brownfield redevelopment as well as the opportunity to rehabilitate the historic textile mill,” said Peters.

Rebirth

2018

Britt, Peters & Associates led the structural assessment and design while Triangle Contractors delivered the renovation of the historical 25,000 SQ FT building. The redevelopment kept the open space, high ceilings, original flooring, exposed brick walls, and skylights.

Flourishing

2025

Today, Phase I of the redevelopment houses Venture X, a coworking space designed to foster collaboration among business professionals. This dynamic environment reflects the collaborative ethos intended for the entire development.

Opportunity

Now

Plush Mills, poised to become a cornerstone of Greenville's thriving innovation hub, is embarking on Phases II & III. The site is envisioned as a dynamic mixed-use development, weaving together retail, office, and residential opportunities into a vibrant tapestry. With 40,000 square feet of adaptable space across two stunning modern buildings, Plush Mills provides the ideal environment for businesses to flourish and residents to connect.

West End

Quaint, urban corner of Downtown makes a name for itself with vibrant amenities and entertainment.

Welcome to West End

A charming historic district on the edge of Downtown

Greenville’s West End Historic District is a charming neighborhood full of pedestrian-friendly streets and bustling shops. As one of Greenville’s handful of historic districts, this quaint, urban corner of Downtown makes a name for itself with vibrant amenities and entertainment, as well as beautiful architecture and a storied past.

West End was inhabited decades before, but it truly began to thrive when both Furman University and the Greenville and Columbia Railroad arrived in the 1850s. It has fluctuated throughout the years, playing home to everything from textile mills to soft drink manufacturing. The residential and commercial areas have thrived since it was declared a historic district in 1993, and current city plans are underway to help the West End evolve into a dynamic entertainment hub full of luscious green spaces.

Because of its status as a historic district, West End boasts many beautiful homes. However, as the neighborhood continues to evolve, there are also many luxurious condos to be found in renovated historic buildings. Finding a home that is steps from the excitement and culture is easy in this charming area.
